So I actually read this book awhile ago, but I LOVE it. It speaks to upper elementary kids with such a positive message--it tells about how people are different and everyone has different skills. It's about a group of four students on a scholastic competition team with their teacher, and although they are all different and all come from different friend groups and personal backgrounds, working together they can accomplish what they want and learn that some of the best people you meet in life are not necessarily the people you thought they would be. This book has a hint of mystery and intrigue to it all throughout that will keep you guessing and wondering how things will turn out for each character.
If you don't believe me about how great this book is, The View From Saturday won a Newbery Medal. Proof!
It also switches viewpoints and voices so if that is something being studied in the classroom, this book would be a good one reference and use. It alternates between the voice of each of the character in each chapter, talking about various life events that they have experienced and how the events relate to the state competition for their scholastic state competition. For example, one of the characters, Noah, will talk about writing in calligraphy and how he was the best man at his grandfather's wedding. Although the events and memories don't always seem to correlate with the impending competition, they do.
5/5 stars! Read this book!
